#AADNOLA spotlight author: Allison Pang
- Tell us a little about yourself.
I never really know how to answer these sorts of questions, so I’ll simply say I’m a gamer, a dreamer, a writer, a mom, and sometimes I like to bake cookies. And build legos.
2. Did you dream of writing when you were a little girl or did you dream of other things like being a ballerina (or world domination, like me)?
Mmm. I don’t know if I dreamed of being a writer. I used to write a lot in grade school, but “grew out if it” in later years since everyone told me I’d never make a living at it. Otherwise, I was definitely headed for the biological sciences. Not that I stayed there. >_<
3. Were you always interested in Urban Fantasy or did you start out interested in something else?
I’m really more of a high fantasy person, so I always assumed that’s where I would end up, but I started writing a paranormal romance first, simply so that I could use it in some of the workshops I had signed up to learn more of the craft. (I had joined RWA and it seemed like the thing to do.) It became A Brush of Darkness, but I was asked to make it into more of a UF after I sold it. It seems to span both genres a bit, though the later books are more UF-oriented.
4. Do you prefer Alpha males or do you like the Betas you can push around?
I don’t really think that way. I just write characters who I’d like to hang out with. (Assuming they’re good guys.) I’m not fond of the “fuck-brute” mentality that seems to flavor some of the alpha male characters I’ve read. It’s not something I find particularly attractive. I don’t know if I’d qualify Beta’s as being push-overs either. I write people. That’s it.
5. What is the first book that you can remember making an impact on you and why did it make such an impact?
I guess it depends on the type of impact. There’s probably too many books to mention, honestly. Every book I’ve ever loved has had an impact in some fashion – either in writing style, or thought process or inspiration.
6. What is your writing process?
I’m mostly a panster – so I usually just have a vague idea of the end point and the beginning point and maybe some key things I’d like to have happen…and then I just let it unfold organically.
7. How do you approach revising?
The main thing I’ve discovered is that I can’t really revise until I’ve got a completed draft done. Otherwise I spend too much time worrying and changing and then I never finish. So I finish the draft and if I can put it away for a few weeks, or longer, than I do. And then come back to it with a fresh set of eyes (and maybe some CP input).
8. What authors inspire you?
Too many to name. Any author that’s made me feel something as a reader is someone I am inspired by.
9. What are your top 5 comfort reads?
Hmmm. Any of the Kushiel’s Dart series by Jacqueline Carey. The Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling. Anne Bishop’s Jewels series. Probably more than that. LOL.
10. Are you part of a group of writers/Do you have 1 trusted reader or CP?
I’m a drifter. I am part of a few groups – Word-Whores and The League of Reluctant Adults, to name a few, but they aren’t CP groups. Just writers with similar interests. I do have a few trusted readers/ CPs – some are authors and some are editors, and some are readers, but between the three types I can usually achieve a good story balance. Everyone brings something different to the table – it’s just up to me to figure out how to use it.
11. Do you have a day job? If so, do you see yourself being able to (or even wanting to) leave it any time in the future to pursue writing full time?
I do have a full time day job and a young family. I would love to be able to write full time, but it’s unlikely that will happen unless I somehow manage to hit J.K. Rowling status. Bills to pay, mouths to feed and all that. I’m not sure I’d want to completely leave the work force anyway – it provides some outside balance to my life, so I think the ideal at this point would be a part-time situation, just to give me more time to write.
12. What is your goal as a writer?
To amuse/entertain as many people as possible.
13. What do you *love* most about writing?
When it works – it’s the most awesome thing in the world. Particularly with a collaboration project – I really enjoy bouncing that energy off another person.
14. What do you *hate* most about writing?
Sometimes it’s a bit difficult to get in the mindset – I always feel like I could be doing more than I am.
15. What are you reading right now?
The latest Jane True book by Nicole Peeler

A marine biologist in a former life, Allison Pang turned to a life of crime to finance her wild spending habits and need to collect Faberge eggs. A cat thief of notable repute, she spends her days sleeping and nights scaling walls and wooing dancing boys….Well, at least the marine biology part is true. But she was taloned by a hawk once. She also loves Hello Kitty, sparkly shoes, and gorgeous violinists.
She spends her days in Northern Virginia working as a cube grunt and her nights waiting on her kids and cats, punctuated by the occasional husbandly serenade. Sometimes she even manages to write. Mostly she just makes it up as she goes.

I am a filthy-mouthed 29-year-old full time mommy/wife/student, bookaholic, Twitter addict, & self-described tomboy-princess. I am never without at least one book (I usually have two... sometimes more), and I will be happy to tell you ALL about whichever book(s) I happen to be reading at the moment. :)
