Review: Mannies Incorporated by Sean Michael

Slayde’s got the best job on earth: he’s a nanny to Army nurse and widow Mindy’s three kids. He’s been with the family since the oldest was born and is Uncle Slayde to all three children. When Mindy’s deployed, things aren’t easy, but he manages just fine. At least he does until Mindy’s big brother Drake shows up unexpectedly, announcing he’s there to help while Mindy is gone.
Drake is almost a stranger to the kids, hot as hell, especially in his motorcycling leathers, and straighter than straight. On top of that, Drake’s not used to dealing with kids, with things like gluten free, recycling and not eating fast food and soon has Slayde’s tight routine in shambles.

Slayde thinks Drake is far more of a hindrance than a help, at least at the start, but he tries to get along for Mindy’s sake and eventually, having Drake around is easier than not. But what’s he supposed to do when the straight, sexy leather wearing ex-cop makes a pass at him one night? Maybe there’s more to Drake than Slayde assumed.

This is the first book that I’ve read from Torquere Press. Although I see books by them all the time, I was sold by the blurb that I read on this book—surprising, I know, since I hardly ever read the synopsis of any book. I usually avoid them because I am almost always disappointed by what I’ve read.

Mannies Incorporated, however, was quite a sweet story. It’s not too deep, and it’s a fun read with not much at stake throughout the novel, which, in this case, is refreshing. I found myself really liking the characters in this novel. The author does a spot-on job of going in to the individual personalities of each character. Too often the characters are the same person, almost, and it’s nice to read a book that takes the time to develop the characters.

What keeps me from giving this book a 5 out of 5, however, is the lack of plot development. While there are no grand sweeping plot twists in this novel, the plot is a little compact for my tastes. Plus, the title is gawdawful.

But overall, this is a great novel that gets at the heart of romance.

4 out of 5

MamaMia

A college student and lover of all things literary, MamaMia has been reading romance novels probably before it was appropriate for her to do so. She is addicted to her iPhone, on which she has three modes of reading books, and is usually (when she is not studying for school or looking at cooking vlogs on YouTube) immersed in a read and getting to love some characters. She is currently on a contemporary romance kick, but is known to read about vampires, teens fighting bad guys, and Navy SEALs, to name a few.
