The United States Declaration of Independence is a statement adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, which announced that the thirteen American colonies then at war with Great Britain were now independent states, and thus no longer a part of the British Empire.

When I joined the US Navy back in 2002, I swore an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States as well as the Declaration of Independence. Today, I will gather will my family and friends to watch the fireworks and celebrate the men and women who have gone before me and who continue after me protecting our freedom.
