Books that make you ignore the entire world
I was reading an interview in the Huffington Post not too long ago with Stevie Nicks and she was discussing (what else?) music. She mentioned that she used to listen to records where she felt like: “Don’t talk to me. Don’t even call me for three days because I am totally busy, and it’s a Godsend this record and I can’t even think about anything else right now.”
And it’s funny, because I’ve felt that way about a few albums back in the day, but now I mostly feel that way about books. I get to the point where I lock myself in my room or in my office just to get away from everyone else because I have to finish this book and if I get interrupted one more time, I might go postal.
I can’t say that I’m entirely lacking in books like that. Just check my 5 star ratings, and those are pretty much all books that I’ve been murderous upon interruption. Off the top of my head, my favorites are:
- No Apologies by Tibby Armstrong. I re-read this one when I’m having a horrible day. Greg and Aaron make everything better.
- Dirty by Megan Hart. This book tears me up no matter how many times I re-read it. But it’s fantastic and I can’t help but pick it back up every now and then.
- Lover Reborn by JR Ward. It’s Tohr. Did you really think he wouldn’t be on my list?
- Naked in Death by JD Robb. Okay, this one I’m kind of cheating, since I’m this way with all JD Robb books, but I had to pick one for my list. Why not go with the one that introduced us to Roarke?
- Acting Out by Tibby Armstrong. Yup, another Tibby book. This is the sequel to No Apologies featuring the actors that played Greg and Aaron in the movie that No Apologies featured. Kit and Jeremy star and I love them almost as much as I love Greg and Aaron.
- Hot Head by Damon Suede. I raved over Dante and Griff’s story. It made me sob like an infant, laugh out loud like a lunatic, and turn on the fan because it was so hot (locker room. unffff.)
But I wonder – what are your favorite DO NOT INTERRUPT ME books?

TRR Erotic Madness Hop – featuring Dirty by Megan Hart
Today, MKR is proud to take part in TheRomanceReviews.com’s Erotic Madness Hop, which runs from today, May 10 until Monday May 14. If you click on the button to the side, it will take you to a randomized blog in the Hop and give you a chance to win another book (for details on the book I’m giving away, look at the bottom of the post for the Rafflecopter widget). The contest will start on May 10, 12:00am EST and will end on May 14, 1159pm EST. As part of this blog hop, each blog talks about their favorite erotic romance and what they love so much about it (and, of course, host a giveaway at the end of the blog post — what’s a blog hop without a few giveaways, right? *wink wink*).
For me, my favorite erotic romance book would have to be Dirty by Megan Hart. I’ve been meaning to review it for ages, but the book means so much to me that it’s hard for me to talk about it without getting choked up – even when just writing about it. I know it sounds weird for me to say that an erotic romance means a lot to me, because a lot of people (mostly the ones who don’t read the way we book lovers do) don’t understand that erotic romance isn’t just about sex in a book. It’s a relationship between two characters that happens to be pretty steamy. And Megan Hart isn’t just good at writing steamy – she’s freaking amazing. So much so that she’s my ultimate all-time favorite author. In fact, she knocked La Nora from the #1 spot… the same spot that she held since I was nine years old. Yes, you read that correctly. Megan Hart is so good at what she does that she took the #1 place in my heart from an author that held the spot for 20 years. But it’s not just because she writes good smex. I mean, she does. She really does. But she writes characters that are deep and flawed and make me care about them. That, to me, is the very best kind of erotic romance.
In Dirty, Elle is damaged. Her past prevents her from having any kind of lasting relationship with a man and her relationship with her mother is… well, to say it’s messed up is putting it lightly. Her OCD rivals mine (and that’s a tough thing to do). And then one day she meets Dan, and suddenly her whole world is turned upside down. Watching Elle struggle through her issues was truly heartbreaking. I can’t say too much without giving away exactly what she’s going through (another reason why it’s been difficult for me to write my review – I don’t like giving away spoilers).
This is what happened…
I met him at the candy store.
He turned and smiled at me and I was surprised enough to smile back. This was not a children’s candy store, mind you–this was the kind
of place you went to buy expensive imported chocolate truffles for your boss’s wife because you felt guilty for having sex with him when you were both at a conference in Milwaukee.
Hypothetically speaking, of course.
I’ve been hit on plenty of times, mostly by men with little finesse who thought what was between their legs made up for what they lacked between their ears.
Sometimes I went home with them anyway, just because it felt good to want and be wanted, even if it was mostly fake.
The problem with wanting is that it’s like pouring water into a vase full of stones. It fills you up before you know it, leaving no room for anything else. I don’t apologize for who I am or what I’ve done in–or out–of bed.
I have my job, my house and my life, and for a long time I haven’t wanted anything else.
Until Dan. Until now.

Review: Precious and Fragile Things by Megan Hart
Gilly Soloman has been reduced to a mothering machine, taking care of everyone and everything except herself. But the machine has broken down. Burnt out by the endless days of crying children and menial tasks, and exhausted from always putting herself last, Gilly doesn’t immediately consider the consequences when she’s carjacked. With a knife to her throat, her first thought is that she’ll finally get some rest. Someone can save her for a change.
But salvation isn’t so forthcoming. Stranded in a remote, snowbound cabin with this stranger, hours turn to days, days into weeks. As time forges a fragile bond between them, she learns her captor is not the lunatic she first believed, but a human being whose wasted life has been shaped by secrets and tragedy. Yet even as their connection begins to foster trust, Gilly knows she must never forget he’s still a man teetering on the edge. One who just might take her with him.

Okay. I really, really wanted to like this book.
Megan Hart writes really great erotica, too. But, I have to admit that I didn’t finish this book. Sure, I had a feeling that there would be little or no sex in this book, and I’m not a heathen, I will read a book with no sex in it from time to time. But, there’s a trade off, I think, that happens when you write a straight fiction, like I think Hart is trying to do here. Some authors use sex as a hook (about 95% of the “hard-core” erotica that I read, but that’s a WHOLE ‘NOTHER post, guys), and because they have great sex scenes, they can get away with having characters which aren’t as likeable. Well, actually, no, they can’t, but they sure do try. When you write “straight fiction,” however, you must have characters–their interactions, their motivations–who can hold the readers interest. I think that Hart missed the mark on her character and plot development, unfortunately.
I got about three-fourths the way through this thing before I had to set it down for good. Gilly, the “protagonist,” *cough* psycho! *cough* vacillates between being a whiny bitch and a case study for Stockholm syndrome. SPOILER ALERT: She has like, three opportunities to escape her carjacker, but she stays! Cognitively, I understand that if she did escape, there would be no book. Okay, I get that. But, damnit if this book went anywhere. Honestly, here’s my summary:
Journal Entry #44. I’ve been stuck in this cabin with this crazy person for three months. I kinda miss my kids and husband, but not really. My mom was insane, and this kid that I’m with is kinda cuckoo, too. I coulda escaped like, fifteen times by now, but, if I’m honest, I don’t want to go back to my perfect life, ‘cause it’s so horrible to be a Jewish-American princess in a great little town. Am I crazy? I’m gonna go make my captor some spaghetti now.
And the song plays on.
This is a great concept, even if it does sound a lot like Perfect by Judith McNaught (which is my FAVORITE romance novel on the planet of romances), but, unfortunately, the execution wasn’t quite up to par.

Thursday Thirteen: 13 books that WRECKED ME

So, I just finished a book that fairly destroyed me (Hard Bitten by Chloe Neill). To the point where I had to call my PIC Bells, totally snot-sobbing, to cry and whine and discuss the MAJOR PLOT ISSUE that nearly killed most of the people that read the book. And this got me to thinking: there have been a lot of books that have gotten to me like that. Seriously. A lot. Which is a good thing. It’s a mark of a really good book if it can pull that kind of emotion from me. If I’m crying (especially snot-sobbing), screaming, or laughing so hard I’m crying, it’s a freaking awesomebook. So this week’s Thursday Thirteen is a list of books that have in one way or another completely wrecked me – whether it be by making me snot-sob on the phone to my besties or by wrecking me for all other books for weeks on end because I’m certain there’s no other way any other book can top the book I just finished.

7. I read this one while I was deployed - and walked around like a zombie after I finished it. Cried SO HARD.

8. Is it really any wonder I have 2 Megan books on the list? Another book where I was an emotional wreck. I still can't re-read this one because it affected me that much (although it is one of my favorites).

10. I had to set the book down at one point & walk away because of a certain scene. It's powerful, haunting, and will rip your soul in two. This is one of my favorite books of all time.

11. This book ruined me for all other books for weeks. Didn't think anything else would be nearly as good.

12. This one is another one that has a scene where I had to get up and walk away. Such a haunting scene, but a beautifully written book.
What about you? Any books wrecked you lately? Which ones?

Review: “Unwrapped” by Megan Hart
Newlyweds Leah and Brandon Long are finally taking a honeymoon. But just two days into their Christmas-in-Vail vacation, Leah gets run down by an out-of-control snowboarder, severely spraining her ankle. Being stuck indoors isn’t so bad though: the luxurious chalet boasts a hot tub and cozy fireplace. Besides, sitting with her feet up while Brandon serves her in every way a man can serve a woman is exactly how both of them like to spend their time.
Leah would be in heaven, if only Brandon didn’t insist on bringing up the idea of a family. She knew that kids were part of the package, but she’s not ready to make any plans just yet. Still, with kinky sex and deep conversation the only things on the agenda for the next week, Leah can’t avoid the discussion for long. Will she be ready to take her marriage to the next level in the New Year?
- Publisher: Carina Press, December 2010
- Genre: short erotic romance
- Language: English
- FTC Disclosure: This book was given to me by the author.
I have to say that Brandon and Leah were my favorite couple in Taking Care of Business and No Reservations. Their relationship was so intense and I was able to connect with them (Leah especially) in a way that I couldn’t with Dix and Kate.
Unwrapped is a short story continuing Brandon and Leah’s story. They’ve been married a few months, and they’re still as intense as ever. They go on a Christmas ski trip as a belated honeymoon and indulge in some of the hottest sex I’ve ever read. The amount of love and trust these two have for each other is obvious, and shines through every page.
When Brandon brings the idea of kids up, it seems as though he’s the one who’s pushing to wait on having any, which is the opposite of what the book blurb said, but I liked the switch up. Seeing Leah go through her mental back-and-forth of “should we or shouldn’t we” was so real and a little on the heartbreaking side. I wish it would’ve been a little longer so that we could see the aftermath of the decision, but it did end in a good place.
If you’ve read Taking Care of Business and No Reservations and want to see more of Brandon and Leah, then you should definitely read Unwrapped. If you haven’t read TCoB and NR, I suggest you correct this oversight immediately, and make sure to pick up Unwrapped the second you’re done.

Review: “Naked” by Megan Hart
No strings. No regrets. And no going back.
I didn’t think he wanted me. And I wasn’t about to get involved with him, not after what I’d heard. Alex Kennedy was tall, dark and unbearably hot, but I’ve been burned before. Maybe it was stupid of me to offer but he needed a place to crash and I needed to pay the rent, but now he’s my tenant…with benefits. And now that we’ve crossed that line, I can’t seem to find my way back.
But I can’t give my heart to a man who’s so…unconventional. His last sexual relationship was with a married couple. It’s enough that my ex-fiancé preferred men, I won’t take that chance again no matter how much my body thrives on Alex’s touch. I can’t risk it, but I can’t resist it, either.
Alex can be very convincing when he wants something.
And he wants me.

Megan Hart is my favorite author. Everyone knows this. So is it really any surprise that I got Naked in print and devoured it in less than 24 hours? *cricket chirping* Yeah, I’m not shocked either.
I fell in love with Alex Kennedy in Tempted. He’s got this persona of being a playboy and that he doesn’t really care about anyone but himself. But started in Tempted and continuing in Naked, you see a whole other side to Alex. Hints of vulnerability and what a great man he truly is are brought to light as we see Alex’s relationship with Olivia grow.
Olivia had plenty of baggage of her own – being in love with her best friend/ex-fiance (who happens to be gay) is a big one. The broken relationship with her mother and her inner search for who she really is only add to her complexity. But Alex and Olivia manage to start a relationship and make it work. I loved watching them grow as people and feel their way through the minefield of their pasts, their emotions, and the outside forces that don’t want them to be together.
I did initially feel that the end was a little too easy, but after re-reading it, I realized that it went exactly the way that it needed to. Ms. Hart had put these two on a path that led up to that point, and they were in a place in their relationship that they could settle the issue the way that they did (which made me so proud of their growth as adults).
I really loved the fact that we got to catch up with Elle & Dan from Dirty, Anne & James from Tempted, and Jack from Stranger. I fell in love with all these characters in the books, so seeing them again was a real treat.
I highly recommend Naked to anyone and everyone. Another brilliant job by Megan Hart!

Interview (and giveaway!) with Megan Hart
If you know nothing else about me, you know that I’m a huge fan of Megan Hart. When people ask what they should read, I usually pipe up with “Anything by Megan Hart. She is amazing!” And I swear, it’s not me kissing her ass. I love Megan Hart. Really. I’d read a grocery list if she wrote it! So, when I decided to email my favorite authors for my bloggy birthday, she was first on the list. I actually fell out of my chair when I got her response saying “Sure thing, dingaling!” Then, I had to control my fangirl squeeing when I was writing the interview questions… I didn’t want her to think I was going to stalk her anymore or anything, LOL.
So before I start the interview, I wanted to thank Ms. Hart so very much for agreeing to be part of MamaKitty Reviews’ first bloggy birthday and allowing me to interview her!
1. How old were you when you began writing?
Probably about…five or six years old. I started writing as soon as I could. Which would be kindergarten or first grade? So…yeah, a long time ago.
2. I can’t choose between Broken and Dirty as to which of your books is my favorite, so I have to ask… Of the books that you have written, which is your favorite?
Tempted!
3. What do you do on your spare time when you’re not writing?
What is this “spare time” of which you speak? Ideally, I play the Sims 3, watch movies, read, sleep. Realistically, I do laundry, clean toilets, ferry children to-and-fro, and sometimes sleep.
4. I love the dances you do on your blog/podcast when you finish a book. What got you started doing it? And what made you decide to post it on your podcast?
Oh, lordy. I don’t know what started me doing it, but it became a tradition. I have to celebrate somehow, right? It’s better than eating ice cream, which is what I used to do. Not that ice cream is bad, but I write and finish a lot of books. Dancing is better for me.
5. How long does it take you (on average) to write a book?
Approximately four months, start to finish, though some have taken longer and a few have taken less.
6. If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in any of your books?
Hmmm. I don’t think so!
7. Exit Light is different than the rest of your books. What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, or logistical) in bringing it to life? And what made you decide to write paranormal fiction?
I love horror, science fiction, fantasy, paranormal fiction. It’s what I really started writing before I ventured into romance and erotic fiction. So the only challenges, really, were finding a place to publish it and…I guess that’s it! I loved writing it. Would definitely write more books like that if given the chance.
8. Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Motivation. I’ll flat out confess, I’d rather putz around on the internet than write, some days.
9. Some of the themes of your books can be considered somewhat on the controversial side (Elle’s backstory in Dirty, inviting Alex into the bedroom with Anne and James in Tempted, paying for sex/sleeping with a total stranger in Stranger…) do you write the more risqué topics on purpose, or does the story just kind of go there?
I don’t write anything controversial on purpose like I’m trying to rile people up. I just try to write the books I’d like to read. I like to give my characters what feels like, to me, anyway, realistic motivations for why they are the way they are. People in this world are a mess, you know? All of us are. Even if we’re well adjusted, happy and content, we have something messy inside us. I like reading about messy. REAL messy, not contrived messy just for the sake of extending a conflict for a hundred pages or in between sex scenes.
10. I have a list of “book boyfriends”, and Dan from Dirty is sort of… in the top 5 (ok, he’s in the top 2… Joe from Broken, and Jack and Sam from Stranger make up 3-5). Out of your male characters, who’s your favorite & would be placed on your “book boyfriend” list?
I have to love them all a little, or else I’m not sure the readers would, either. I’d say Alex is my favorite male character, though. I like Jack a lot, possibly because he’s based on someone I met in real life and I just feel a little “mmm, mmm, mmm” when I think of him. But really, I have to love them all or else my heroines might not be able to.
Lightning round:
- Salt or pepper? — salt
- Ketchup or mustard? — ketchup
- Light or dark? — dark
- Princess or tomboy? — tomboy
- Up or down? — up
I’d like to thank the wonderful and amazing Megan Hart (again) for agreeing to let me interview her. And even moreso for agreeing to a GIVEAWAY! That’s right… Megan’s offering a signed copy of her latest book Naked! You want it? See the rules below.

Fan letter to Megan Hart
I caught wind of the Author Fan Letter Blog Crawl via KC at smokinhotbooks.com, and I was immediately intrigued. Fans writing letters to their favorite authors? Awesome. But which one of my favorite authors would I pick? I didn’t want to risk repeating a fan letter to an author, but then I realized that it’s not about who writes to which author. It’s about writing the letter in thanks to the author who has put their blood, sweat, and tears into a manuscript that eventually reached our hands and our hearts.
I debated for a short while over which author to write my letter to. Really, it wasn’t much of an internal debate. My first thought was “Write a letter to your favorite author”, which was quickly followed by “Well, duh!” So, I decided to write to the fantastically talented Megan Hart.
Dear Ms. Hart,
I’ve told my story on how I stumbled over your books a few times, but I don’t know that I’ve ever told you directly (via Twitter, of course), so I suppose I should now.
One of my friends knew about my book obsession, and also knew that I was on the prowl for a new author to read – someone who would hold my interest for more than a book or two, and someone who’d actually give me a challenge as a reader. Yes, I was suffering from reader’s boredom. So, being the amazing friend she was, she sent me a copy of Broken.
And I was immediately in love.
I didn’t even have to crack the spine. I just read the blurb on the back, and I knew this was going to be a great book. And holy hell, was I ever right! I was riveted from page one, so much so that I made my boyfriend order pizza (he’s hopeless in the kitchen) and put Monkey to bed. I stayed up til 2am to finish Broken, despite the fact that I had to be up at 5am for work.
As soon as I was finished with the book (yes, at 2am – luckily, it was only midnight where she lived), I called my friend to ask if you’d written more books and to both curse her and bless her for getting me hooked on a new author.
Every book I’ve read by you since has done the same – pulled me in from page one (who am I kidding? From sentence one), made me laugh, cry, scream, and sigh in a squidgy “Ohmygod, I’m in love” mess. Each character is beautifully written, every storyline is compelling, and when I finish reading, I’m always left with a feeling of satisfaction, and a little bit of loss – because I fall a little bit in love with the characters, and I don’t want the story to end.
Thank you for sharing your stories with us.

Contest! A few of my favorite things…
Next Tuesday (May 11th) is my 27th birthday. What does one do when they have a birthday? Give presents to other people, of course! I’ve had the idea for a while to have a monthly contest where I gush about my favorite book (at the moment) and then give it away. The contest is is officially called “A few of my favorite things“, since I was listening to Julie Andrews when I came up with the idea. I had this idea where I was going to talk about how my love of books began (but that’s probably left for another blog post when you have a tissue handy), but I decided to stick with the happy PARTY! theme. So. Because it is my birthday, and it’s the first edition of AFoMFT contest, I’m going to give away not one but TWO books!(see? party!)
The first book I’m giving away is “Remember When” by Nora Roberts/JD Robb. It’s a “crossover” book featuring a story written by Nora Roberts and another connected book by JD Robb (who are actually the same person – for those who don’t know). While it’s most definitely not the first NR book I read (that honor goes to “Finding the Dream”), it was the first JD Robb book I ever picked up. At the time I read the book, I had no idea that “In Death” was an ongoing series. I fell in love with Even Dallas and Roarke (and the rest of the characters), and the moment I found out it was a series, I went out and bought every single book. My credit card set itself on fire, but it was worth it. I have since gone back and re-read the series at least twice. Probably more.
Laine Tavish is an ordinary woman living an ordinary life in the small town of Angel’s Gap, Maryland, as the proprietor of Remember When, an antique treasures and gift shop. At least, that’s what everyone in Angel’s Gap thinks. They have no idea that she used to be Elaine O’Hara, daughter of the notorious con man Big Jack O’Hara. Or that she grew up moving from place to place, one step ahead of the law . . .
Laine’s past has just caught up with her, though—in a very dramatic way. Her long-lost uncle suddenly turned up in her shop, leaving only a cryptic warning before dying in the street, run down by a car. Soon afterward, her home is ransacked. Now it’s up to Laine, and a sexy stranger named Max Gannon, to find out who’s chasing her, and why.
The answer lies in a hidden fortune-a fortune that will change not only Laine’s life but also the lives of future generations. And danger and death will surround that fortune for years to come. Until New York City detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas gets on the case.

The second book I’m giving away is “Broken” by Megan Hart. This book was loaned to me by a friend a couple of years ago. I read the blurb on the back of the book and immediately cracked it open. For the rest of the night, I did not move from my spot on the bed. I made FH order pizza and basically ignored him while he watched TV in the living room. I stayed up til about 2 in the morning, despite having to be up at 5 the next day. I regret nothing. “Broken” was the beginning of my Megan Hart obsession love, and is one of the primary reasons that the author who I’d deemed “my favorite” for 13 years was knocked out of the #1 position (Ms. Hart now holds that honor…. obviously).
My name is different every month — Brandy, Honey, Amy…sometimes Joe doesn’t even bother to ask — but he never fails to arouse me with his body, his mouth, his touch, no matter what I’m called or where he picks me up.
The sex is always amazing, always leaves me itching for more in those long weeks until I see him again. My real name is Sadie, and once a month over lunch, Joe tells me about his latest conquest. But what Joe doesn’t know is that, in my mind, I’m the star of every X-Rated one-night stand he has revealed to me, or that I’m practically obsessed with our imaginary sex life.
I know it’s wrong. I know my husband wouldn’t understand. But I can’t stop.Not yet.

I am a filthy-mouthed 29-year-old full time mommy/wife/student, bookaholic, Twitter addict, & self-described tomboy-princess. I am never without at least one book (I usually have two... sometimes more), and I will be happy to tell you ALL about whichever book(s) I happen to be reading at the moment. :)
