Thursday Thirteen: 13 books that WRECKED ME

So, I just finished a book that fairly destroyed me (Hard Bitten by Chloe Neill). To the point where I had to call my PIC Bells, totally snot-sobbing, to cry and whine and discuss the MAJOR PLOT ISSUE that nearly killed most of the people that read the book. And this got me to thinking: there have been a lot of books that have gotten to me like that. Seriously. A lot. Which is a good thing. It’s a mark of a really good book if it can pull that kind of emotion from me. If I’m crying (especially snot-sobbing), screaming, or laughing so hard I’m crying, it’s a freaking awesomebook. So this week’s Thursday Thirteen is a list of books that have in one way or another completely wrecked me – whether it be by making me snot-sob on the phone to my besties or by wrecking me for all other books for weeks on end because I’m certain there’s no other way any other book can top the book I just finished.

7. I read this one while I was deployed - and walked around like a zombie after I finished it. Cried SO HARD.

8. Is it really any wonder I have 2 Megan books on the list? Another book where I was an emotional wreck. I still can't re-read this one because it affected me that much (although it is one of my favorites).

10. I had to set the book down at one point & walk away because of a certain scene. It's powerful, haunting, and will rip your soul in two. This is one of my favorite books of all time.

11. This book ruined me for all other books for weeks. Didn't think anything else would be nearly as good.

12. This one is another one that has a scene where I had to get up and walk away. Such a haunting scene, but a beautifully written book.
What about you? Any books wrecked you lately? Which ones?

Contest! A few of my favorite things…
Next Tuesday (May 11th) is my 27th birthday. What does one do when they have a birthday? Give presents to other people, of course! I’ve had the idea for a while to have a monthly contest where I gush about my favorite book (at the moment) and then give it away. The contest is is officially called “A few of my favorite things“, since I was listening to Julie Andrews when I came up with the idea. I had this idea where I was going to talk about how my love of books began (but that’s probably left for another blog post when you have a tissue handy), but I decided to stick with the happy PARTY! theme. So. Because it is my birthday, and it’s the first edition of AFoMFT contest, I’m going to give away not one but TWO books!(see? party!)
The first book I’m giving away is “Remember When” by Nora Roberts/JD Robb. It’s a “crossover” book featuring a story written by Nora Roberts and another connected book by JD Robb (who are actually the same person – for those who don’t know). While it’s most definitely not the first NR book I read (that honor goes to “Finding the Dream”), it was the first JD Robb book I ever picked up. At the time I read the book, I had no idea that “In Death” was an ongoing series. I fell in love with Even Dallas and Roarke (and the rest of the characters), and the moment I found out it was a series, I went out and bought every single book. My credit card set itself on fire, but it was worth it. I have since gone back and re-read the series at least twice. Probably more.
Laine Tavish is an ordinary woman living an ordinary life in the small town of Angel’s Gap, Maryland, as the proprietor of Remember When, an antique treasures and gift shop. At least, that’s what everyone in Angel’s Gap thinks. They have no idea that she used to be Elaine O’Hara, daughter of the notorious con man Big Jack O’Hara. Or that she grew up moving from place to place, one step ahead of the law . . .
Laine’s past has just caught up with her, though—in a very dramatic way. Her long-lost uncle suddenly turned up in her shop, leaving only a cryptic warning before dying in the street, run down by a car. Soon afterward, her home is ransacked. Now it’s up to Laine, and a sexy stranger named Max Gannon, to find out who’s chasing her, and why.
The answer lies in a hidden fortune-a fortune that will change not only Laine’s life but also the lives of future generations. And danger and death will surround that fortune for years to come. Until New York City detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas gets on the case.

The second book I’m giving away is “Broken” by Megan Hart. This book was loaned to me by a friend a couple of years ago. I read the blurb on the back of the book and immediately cracked it open. For the rest of the night, I did not move from my spot on the bed. I made FH order pizza and basically ignored him while he watched TV in the living room. I stayed up til about 2 in the morning, despite having to be up at 5 the next day. I regret nothing. “Broken” was the beginning of my Megan Hart obsession love, and is one of the primary reasons that the author who I’d deemed “my favorite” for 13 years was knocked out of the #1 position (Ms. Hart now holds that honor…. obviously).
My name is different every month — Brandy, Honey, Amy…sometimes Joe doesn’t even bother to ask — but he never fails to arouse me with his body, his mouth, his touch, no matter what I’m called or where he picks me up.
The sex is always amazing, always leaves me itching for more in those long weeks until I see him again. My real name is Sadie, and once a month over lunch, Joe tells me about his latest conquest. But what Joe doesn’t know is that, in my mind, I’m the star of every X-Rated one-night stand he has revealed to me, or that I’m practically obsessed with our imaginary sex life.
I know it’s wrong. I know my husband wouldn’t understand. But I can’t stop.Not yet.
The Rules!
- You must comment on this entry!
- You must leave me with a way to contact you!
- You must leave the name of one of your favorite things!
- Unfortunately, my budget dictates that this contest can only be open to US & Canada residents (international contests will be coming soon, I promise!)
The contest will close on my birthday next Tuesday, May 11th, at 10pm CST. The winners (two books = two winners!) will be chosen via random.org and announced on Wednesday, May 12th.
Good luck to everyone, and I can’t wait to see what some of your favorite things (books!!) are!
