book: the rebuilding year
Video Review: The Rebuilding Year by Kaje Harper
Losing nearly everything leaves room for the one thing they can’t live without.
A few excruciating minutes pinned in a burning building cost Ryan Ward his job as a firefighter, the easy camaraderie of his coworkers, his girlfriend, and damn near cost him his left leg. Giving up, though, isn’t an option. Compared to the alternative, choosing a new profession, going back to school, and renting a room from the college groundskeeper are simple.
Until he realizes he’s falling in love with his housemate, and things take a turn for the complicated.
John Barrett knows about loss. After moving twice to stay in touch with his kids, he could only watch as his ex-wife whisked them away to California. Offering Ryan a room seems better than rattling around the empty house, but as casual friendship moves to something more, and a firestorm of emotions ignites, the big old house feels like tight quarters.
It’s nothing they can’t learn to navigate, though. But when dead bodies start turning up on campus—and one of the guys is a suspect—their first taste of real love could go up in smoke.
Warning: Contains two hot men wrestling with a shift in their sexuality, as well as a few positions probably listed in the Gay Kama Sutra. But it’s not all about the hot and sweaty—especially when your previously straight life knocks on the door and comes back to visit.

Dewey’s 24 hour readathon – wrap up
For this year’s Readathon, I managed to read 4 books, which isn’t bad considering the fact that I had all kinds of interruptions. Mostly from my family, who demanded that I spend time with them on the weekend (how dare they!). I think that if they’d have gone out of town or had their father/daughter date like they were supposed to, I definitely would’ve gotten more reading done. But I wouldn’t trade my time with my family for anything, so it’s a moot point.
The final numbers:
The Rebuilding Year: 234 pages
With the Band: 269 pages
First Time, Forever: 78 pages
Brook Street Thief: 116 pages
End of Event Meme:
- Which hour was most daunting for you? - (my) hour 12. I kept falling asleep.
- Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? – I just went through my NetGalley list, which contained several m/m books, which are high on my interest list right now. Go through my GoodReads TBR pile if you’re interested to see what’s next or my already read list to see what I’ve already gone through.
- Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? – Nope. I think it goes pretty smoothly.
- What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? – I love that there’s a twitter account for the readathon.
- How many books did you read? – 4. Woot!!
- What were the names of the books you read? – See above.
- Which book did you enjoy most? – The Rebuilding Year by Kaje Harper.
- Which did you enjoy least? – Brook Street Thief by Ava March
- If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders? – I was just a reader this year.
- How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time? – Very likely!

Dewey’s 24 Hour Read-A-Thon check in
I know I should’ve posted my first check in this morning when I woke up, but the minute I woke up (late — I didn’t roll out of bed until after 10), I grabbed my iPad and started reading. Since this is a 24 hour read-a-thon, I figure I won’t stop until tomorrow at 10am. Or thereabouts. I still have church to go to and it starts at 10:30.
So far I’ve read two books, which is actually pretty slow for me considering I’ve been reading for 6 hours. But PK and Monkey have been interrupting me non-stop.

Hard rock band Schadenfreude is finally on the verge of the success that’s eluded them for the last several years. With Aaron McClure as their new lead singer, nothing’s going to stop them…except maybe a steamy, secret relationship between Aaron and bassist Bastian Koehler. Aaron knows all too well what can happen when band members get involved with each other. After all, his last band was a casualty of his last relationship, and Schadenfreude forbids band members from dating for that very reason. But Bastian is too hot to resist, and besides, it’s just sex, so what’s the harm?
Bastian has just gotten out of a long relationship with his volatile ex-fiancée when Aaron catches his eye. The sexy singer is irresistible, and in spite of the potential for strife within the band if this comes out, Bastian can’t help himself.
Their passion in the bedroom is rivaled only by their ambition as musicians, though, and pretty soon, it’s going to tear them, and Schadenfreude apart, if they can’t get back to playing with the band.
