Review: Wolf with Benefits by Shelly Laurenston

There’s nothing like a good-ol’-boy wolf.  And ace security expert Ricky Lee Reed serves, protects and seduces with all the right moves…

Sure, Toni Jean-Louis Parker has to be the responsible oldest sister to a crazy-brilliant clan of jackal siblings. But now she’s cutting loose for some hot, sweaty, no-commitments fun—and the sexy, slow-talking, swift-moving predator assigned to keep her family safe is just the right thing to shapeshift her love life into overdrive. Trouble is, he’s starting to get all obsessive wolf on her every time he looks in her direction…

Getting serious about anyone isn’t in Ricky Lee Reed’s plans. Hell, even now he doesn’t really have a plan—outside of catching whomever is threatening this dangerously brilliant family. But the more he sees of Toni, the more he’s howling for her. And whatever it takes to convince her that what they have is everything, well, this wily wolf is down for the sizzling chase…

All right kids I’m not going to lie, I LOVE THIS SERIES! If you haven’t read The Pride Series: you should hit the nearest book store/library/e-book store and start with The Mane Event! *Note there is also mention of The Magnus Pack and having read them makes that even better when you hit that point in the story.*

Toni is the oldest of 11 kids, that’s right, she has 10 younger siblings!  These siblings have been for the most part her whole life.  Oh, did I fail to mention that they are all child prodigies?  Well, they are, every last one of them and Toni manages their schedules and them.  Her mother is a famous violinist, her father is the perfect mate and follows her mother everywhere.  Now that the family had invaded Manhattan, Toni finds a job outside her immediate family and the chaos and meddling ensues!

Ricky Lee Reed is a patient, laid back wolf.  Coming from the Reed/Smith pack he has to be, but something about Toni fires up his protective instincts.  The fact that his pregnant sister and cousin are “hounding” him because his ex is in town gives him just the excuse he needs to ensure he is on the protection detail of the cute little jackal he has been sniffing around – Toni!

Toni and Ricky’s relationship was very sweet, and I really loved how patient he was with EVERYTHING.  (I want to go to Siberia with him myself.)  I did feel that not enough emphasis was put on Toni coming to terms with being something other than her siblings’ keeper.  I felt that she really blossomed in that regard, but she herself never addressed it.

Getting to visit with past and new characters was so much fun.  Toni’s younger siblings added humor, mayhem, and just the right amount of cute.

If you’re a fan of humor, with side plots, an ever expanding world, and all around GREAT characters, this book series is for you!

Review: Halo of the Damned by Dina Rae

A chain of advertising agencies, a new breed of humans, and a fallen angel to worship…

Andel Talistokov is known for his slick advertising agencies across the globe. He is a fallen angel that uses advertising as a weapon for Satan’s work. His growing power emboldens him to break several of Hell’s Commandments. Furious with his arrogance, Satan commands him to return to Hell after finding his own replacement. Yezidism, an ancient angel worshiping religion, quietly expands throughout the West. Armaros appears as a guest of honor during their ceremonies. He mates with young women to produce nephilim, a mixed race of humans and angels. They are alone and unprepared for their supernatural power. Joanna Easterhouse, a recovering drug addict, steps out of prison shortly after her mother’s fatal accident. She and her sister, Kim, unravel their mother’s secretive past. Intrigued, they learn their bloodline is part of a celestial legacy. Both worlds collide. Halo of the Damned is a horrifying tale that weaves research together with suspenseful twists and turns.

  • *This book not for the faint of heart, if you have an aversion to blood and gore, rape, incest, or anything cult related; then this book is not for you.

Let’s jump right in with my likes and dislikes.

Likes: The characters, they are all flawed – extremely flawed.  Some are redeemable; others make your skin crawl.  I know this was the intent, and it takes true talent to portray that in the manner it is done here.  I normally don’t add or mention songs in my reviews, but after the first chapter, every time Andel came onto the page I heard the song Scavengers of the Damned by Aiden in my head.  I loved that Joanna wasn’t magically cured of her addictive behavior and that she recognized her flaws for what they were.  Even the baddies made you want to know what they were doing, thinking, and feeling.  Tony – just TONY!!!  The creeps – if you are reading a horror novel and you don’t get that cold chills, hair on the back of your neck standing, pit of your stomach dropping feeling, the author just isn’t doing a good job.  From page one, Ms Rae brings it and then keeps it coming!

Dislikes:  It felt a bit rushed.  Maybe the editor cut some of the narrative, but being a longtime fan of this genre, I felt this story deserved another hundred pages, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just my opinion.  A few spelling errors and one very noticeable repeat sentence was present, but more than forgivable.  Maybe these aren’t so much dislikes, but small complaints.

Overall, I recommend this book to horror fans, conspiracy theorists, and book lovers with a  4 full meows!  I started out my love of reading with horror novels and have since traveled far and wide, let me tell you –  I am oh so happy to be home with Halo of the Damned!

Link to song mentioned above: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAersib_JHM, when you read the book hit me up with your recommended theme song for one of the characters!

Review: Stuck on You by Heather Thurmeier

If being forced to team up with reality TV’s favorite bad girl wasn’t enough, falling for her brother might just make this reality show a real nightmare.

Paige Anderson agrees to be on a new reality show called Treasure Trekkers, a show where contestants use handheld GPS units to find hidden caches filled with prizes, with her good friend Cassidy. But when Cassidy is unable to compete, Chip Cormack, the show’s producer, steps in with a last-minute replacement to be Paige’s partner – Zoe Oliver, reality TV’s favorite bad girl.

Jack Miles (aka Miles) is a mountain climber with the body to prove it. Miles convinced his climbing partner Ben to come on the show with him for one reason – to prove to Ben that they can still hike together, regardless of the fact that Ben lost his foot in a tragic accident. Miles isn’t about to let anything get in his way of winning – not even beautiful Paige.

But when Miles and Paige are thrown into an alliance with their teammates, working closely together leads to more than just good strategy. Can Paige steal Miles’ heart while surviving Zoe long enough to win the game?

To be honest with you, after reading Falling for You, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book and I wasn’t disappointed.

I can’t tell you how happy I was to have loveable Paige in the spotlight in this one.  She is out to redeem herself after her less than stellar appearance on The One and to spend some quality time with her new best friend Cassidy.  This go around her and Cassidy will be paired up on the new show Treasure Trekkers (The Amazing Race meets Geo caching).  Paige discovers shortly after arriving that not only will Cassidy not be competing, but that the producers have already filled Cassidy’s spot with none other than Zoe Oliver.  Zoe was really quite cruel and shallow in the last book, so I was very anxious to see how this would play out.

Paige soon meets up with Jack Miles (Miles) from an opposing team and they have instant chemistry.  Miles has his own reasons for being leery of Zoe.

The hilarity ensues as the teams compete to find the prizes and Paige tries to find her inner Diva.  I truly enjoyed watching Paige gain confidence and seeing her break down the barriers of Zoe’s icy exterior.  For me, this book was about overcoming for Miles *swoon*, Ben (Miles’ best friend), Paige, and Zoe.

The only thing that really aggravated me was Paige and Zoe’s insistence on wearing stiletto heels for tasks like climbing and hiking.  I understand the image they were trying to set, but it seemed unrealistic for them to have been taken seriously.

Overall, Heather Thurmeier gives us a funny, sweet, and insightful romance and I will definitely be reading Zoe’s story in the next book.

ARC Review: Fever by Maya Banks

Jace, Ash, and Gabe: three of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the country. They’re accustomed to getting anything they want. Anything at all. For Jace, it’s a woman whose allure takes him completely by surprise…

Jace Crestwell, Ash McIntyre, and Gabe Hamilton have been best friends and successful business partners for years. They’re powerful, they’re imposing, they’re irresistibly sexy, and Jace and Ash share everything—including their women.

When they meet Bethany, Jace begins to feel things he’s never experienced before: jealousy, and a powerful obsession that threatens him, overwhelms him—and excites him beyond control.

Jace isn’t sharing Bethany—with anyone. He’s determined to be the only man in her life, and it’s jeopardizing a lifelong friendship with Ash. Bethany will be his and his alone. Even if it means turning his back on his best friend.

Bethany has been homeless since she was nineteen and in foster care before that, she has seen her fair share of life on the streets. She was once addicted to drugs then turned to sex as a means to cope with coming off the drugs.  Though she’s working hard to keep her life straight, having a threesome with Jace and Ash, knowing she’d get dinner and a place to sleep for the night, didn’t seem like a bad idea. When Jace finds her in a homeless shelter weeks after their encounter she’s surprised to realize he’d actually come looking for her. They live in two separate worlds…her with virtually nothing but the clothes she has on her back and him with the world at his fingertips and more money than God. Why would he want her? That’s the dilemma Bethany deals with though out the story…she’s not good enough for him.

Jace, used to sharing everything with Ash, including his women, is surprised to realize he wants Bethany all to himself. As soon as he lays eyes on her something within him wants to make her his and take care of her. Once he finds out she’s homeless he will do anything to find her and protect her. After their threesome with Bethany, Jace regrets ever going through with it and can’t get the image of Ash and Bethany out of his head. This is something that he must work out if he wants to have Bethany and Ash in his life.

Jack is the person who grew up in foster care with Bethany then took to the streets with her. He is the only person who has stuck by Bethany’s side. While she thinks of him as her “brother”, he holds stronger feelings for her. He’s in and out of the story but always present in her mind, as she worries about him constantly. To ease Bethany’s worry, Jace gives Jack permission to stay in his sisters’ old apartment until he can get back on his feet. Jace truly tries to help Jack as much as possible. Even at the end when something Jack does unintentionally lands Bethany in the hospital on her deathbed, Jace is still willing to get Jack the help he needs.  I hope we find out in Burn if he gets his act together.

While I did enjoy this book and I don’t want to be too negative, I want to point out a few things that made this book not my favorite:

- I didn’t bond with the characters right away. Really understanding the characters helps me lose myself in their story. For some reason I wasn’t able to get into Bethany.

- Jace wants a submissive woman but he’s afraid to push Bethany to far so he takes it easy on her until she gets used to the idea. This would be fine except he never really gets to the point where he displays his dominance. There are more scenes where Bethany takes over and ask for what she wants instead of him being the dominant one.

-I feel (maybe) this book was written in a hurry? The story line is great, but I felt there was an opportunity for so much more to have happened.

I love Maya Banks, and while this book wasn’t my favorite of hers I’m still very much looking forward to reading Ash’s story in the third book, Burn.

I’m giving this book a 4. While I enjoyed the story, I had a few issues and it wasn’t one that I couldn’t put down.

Review: The Story of Rachel (Tales of Pandora Book 1) by K.D. McLean

Rachel Collins is praying. And not for world peace. Thirty six years old and single, her prayer is self-centered. “Kill me now, Lord,” she pleads during her latest attempt to meet Mr. Right via the internet.
She’s not hoping for a billionaire or even a millionaire, just a guy who can strike a spark to her tinder! Is she asking too much? She’s a great gal! Just ask her parents! She might be a bit naive about some things, but capable enough- she’s a correspondent for a major magazine, after all. So there!
On assignment she meets Michael, 42 years old, also a writer. The attraction is immediate and intense. Rachel, who sees vanilla as only a baking ingredient, enchants him. Michael can whip up some pretty hot delights himself, outside of the kitchen. He introduces a curious Rachel to powerful experiences of sensuality. Her Ladylike sense of propriety engages in a running battle with her now sparked Tinderbox desires.
Michael is an excellent cook and knows how to turn up the heat. Sampling the flavors offered, Rachel experiences humorous hiccups. On a date, Michael ramps up the risqué, resulting in a memorable skirt swirling salsa dance. Rachel’s “What the hell, I ain’t getting any younger” attitude spurs Michael to take her to the exclusive, adults only club Pandora’s. Here, Rachel witnesses even more variations of earthly delights, and begins a lifelong friendship with another guest.
Michael is a realist, convinced that within 90 days, his affair with Rachel will be but another painful memory of loss. He is neither willing nor able to yell ‘Geronimo’ and fall for her. He can’t, and that’s that.
Maybe he should just get a damn dog.
This modern, urban, grown up love story is a recipe –three cups romance and one cup of slapdash humor. Blend in spices of eroticism, and beat until smooth.

First off… I would like to acknowledge that this is KD’s first book and I am so glad that her book found it’s way to me. I have only chatted  with her by email, but I can tell that she is a totally awesome person and I am looking forward to more of her books in the future.

With that said, I should probably get on with my review. Oh Rachel, Rachel, Rachel. What a naive girl she is. She is so sweet and nice and doesn’t have a clue that her life is about to take a turn to the kinky side. What a ride she is about to go on.

When Rachels new assignment for the paper is to attend a gallery opening she thinks it’s a piece of cake. Vanilla cake that is… She is suprised to find that the artists’ paintings are about Dominance and submission. She is very drawn to his work for a reason that she doesn’t know yet. She meets a very hot guy named Michael and from the very beginning you can see there is an attraction between the two of them.

Michael takes her on a surprising journey that will bring them together as no one in either of their lives has taken them before. It is a lovely romance that had me laughing my ass off. The whole ordeal with the square of toilet paper had me almost peeing in my pants I was laughing so hard. You’ll have to read it to know what I am talking about. I also had  a few teary-eyed moments and some when I was totally pissed at Michael for being a dumb jerk. But I finished the book with a sigh and a smile on my face.

This was a great book from a new author and I am anxiously awaiting the next book in the Tales of Pandora series.

Review: Once a Marine by Cat Grant

Once a MarineLove is a battlefield.

Discharged under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, former Marine major Cole Hammond is struggling to find a new identity. But PTSD casts a pall on everything, and his hard-nosed, homophobic father can’t even bear to look him in the eye. To top it all off, he’s pretty sure he’s flunking out of law school.

Marc Sullivan is a kind, sensitive romance author-slash-waiter with a thing for men in uniform. Cole’s not wearing his anymore, but there’s no mistaking the warrior Marc meets in the diner one rainy afternoon. Cole’s sexy smile and Carolina drawl prove irresistible, but Marc’s played this game before, and he always loses. Once a Marine, always a Marine, and if there’s one thing Marc knows about such men, it’s that they all leave him in the end. It doesn’t help that Cole’s practically closeted in public, or that he refuses to seek treatment for his PTSD.

But like any good Marine, Cole’s willing to fight for what matters. And like the characters in Marc’s stories, he’s certain that if they try just hard enough, together they can find their own happily ever after.

I love Marines. I can’t help it. All my years int he Nay has be trained to love a man in uniform. So when I saw that Cat Grant had written about a Marine, I was all over it like a fat kid on cake.

Cole was discharged under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) and is having a difficult time adjusting to civilian life. When he meets Marc, there’s an instant attraction. But years of hiding who he is have made it difficult for Cole to be open about his sexuality. This makes Marc understandably upset, since he ends up feeling like Cole’s dirty little secret. It was great to watch them work through their issues, although sometimes I felt like they were too quick to fight When Cole had to go home to take care of a family emergency, Marc got upset. With how close Marc is to his own mother, I felt like he should have understood more.

Overall, it was a good story. The characters kept me engaged  and I was invested in them all the way through. I felt a genuine connection with Marc and a kinship with Cole, and love them both.

Review: Fire on the Island By J.K. Hogan

All Isla Macallen wanted was a simple existence on her little Scottish island, free from her mother’s insanity and the prying eyes of neighbors. What she got was embroiled in a war for the souls of mankind. A war of good versus evil, of witches versus demons, and Isla learns that she alone can end it.

Dr. Jeremiah Rousseau was a self-proclaimed nomad, traveling the world researching paranormal phenomena. He doesn’t expect his research to lead him to Scotland, and to the woman who will turn his world upside down.

Together with a facetious shapeshifting animal spirit guide, Jeremiah and Isla discover that she is part of an ancient bloodline bred to protect the gateways between the human world and the spirit world, to keep evil demons from destroying them. They must find the key to defeating Alastore, the demon king, and closing the gate before Samhain, when the veil between the worlds is lifted. As the war for their souls wages around them, Isla and Jeremiah will risk it all for love—a love neither had ever thought possible.

I am always looking for a new paranormal series to read, and I found one!

This first journey into the Bruixi world brings us to the Scottish island of Arran and our heroine, Isla Macallen.  Isla owns a successful tour guide business, (although the locals think she is just a guide), and thinks of herself as an ordinary woman who has overcome a traumatic past.  Because of the strange tattoo on her neck, the locals have shunned her as a witch.

Dr. Jeremiah Rousseau, or “Jere”, is a parapsychologist who validates or de-bunks ghost stories and other paranormal activities and then writes about his experiences.  He is handed the opportunity to head to Scotland to the island to investigate the rumors of a line of witches, that may be related to a life changing event from his past, when his editor forces a vacation on him.

The first books in a new paranormal series can be tricky because we also as readers need an introduction to the world and its rules.  This was handled beautifully in Fire on The Island, since Isla and Jere are learning for the first time we get to learn right along with them.  I loved this aspect of the book, it made everything work for me.

Review: Mannies Incorporated by Sean Michael

Slayde’s got the best job on earth: he’s a nanny to Army nurse and widow Mindy’s three kids. He’s been with the family since the oldest was born and is Uncle Slayde to all three children. When Mindy’s deployed, things aren’t easy, but he manages just fine. At least he does until Mindy’s big brother Drake shows up unexpectedly, announcing he’s there to help while Mindy is gone.
Drake is almost a stranger to the kids, hot as hell, especially in his motorcycling leathers, and straighter than straight. On top of that, Drake’s not used to dealing with kids, with things like gluten free, recycling and not eating fast food and soon has Slayde’s tight routine in shambles.

Slayde thinks Drake is far more of a hindrance than a help, at least at the start, but he tries to get along for Mindy’s sake and eventually, having Drake around is easier than not. But what’s he supposed to do when the straight, sexy leather wearing ex-cop makes a pass at him one night? Maybe there’s more to Drake than Slayde assumed.

This is the first book that I’ve read from Torquere Press. Although I see books by them all the time, I was sold by the blurb that I read on this book—surprising, I know, since I hardly ever read the synopsis of any book. I usually avoid them because I am almost always disappointed by what I’ve read.

Mannies Incorporated, however, was quite a sweet story. It’s not too deep, and it’s a fun read with not much at stake throughout the novel, which, in this case, is refreshing. I found myself really liking the characters in this novel. The author does a spot-on job of going in to the individual personalities of each character. Too often the characters are the same person, almost, and it’s nice to read a book that takes the time to develop the characters.

What keeps me from giving this book a 5 out of 5, however, is the lack of plot development. While there are no grand sweeping plot twists in this novel, the plot is a little compact for my tastes. Plus, the title is gawdawful.

But overall, this is a great novel that gets at the heart of romance.

This weekend was a good one for my reading pleasure. I received a copy of Secrets of the Heart a few days ago, and I whipped through it. While it started off a little rough (both of the principle characters were virtually unlikeable in the first chapter), the book turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The whirlwind romance between Prince Nicholas and Isabelle has that old-school romance feel that I’ve been a bit nostalgic for in this 50 Shades world. Secrets of the Heart does leave some pretty big unanswered questions, but this is a short book, bordering on novella status, and for what it is, the novel is a sweet love story that, over-all, makes great sense, and has good characters. I hope that the author writes a second book with the Prince’s brother (you know how I always go for those secondary characters).

Review: Bridesmaid Lotto by Rachel Astor

Bridesmaid Lotto (McMaster the Disaster)

Book 1 in the USA Today Bestselling McMaster the Disaster series.

Josephine McMaster is pretty and smart, but very much a klutzy mess. Finally, at 26, she may have actually lost the dreaded ‘McMaster the Disaster’ nickname that has followed her around her whole life.

Josie’s quite content to be single, much to her mother’s disappointment. So when a bizarre contest is announced where a socialite is holding a lottery to pick her bridesmaids (and rake in a little extra cash), she can’t roll her eyes fast enough, even if it does mean meeting Jake Hall, her one and only movie star crush. Obviously, Josie doesn’t enter the bridesmaid lottery, so you can imagine her surprise when her picture pops up among the winners, thanks to Mom. With a little prodding — okay bribing — Josie agrees to participate.

The wedding turns into the event of the year, and Josie finds herself in the middle of a paparazzi feeding frenzy, which gets even crazier after Jake Hall takes a special interest in her.

Can Josie handle the pressure in the spotlight? Is it possible she might really have a chance with Jake Hall? And if she’s busy worrying about all that, how in the heck is she going to keep ‘McMaster the Disaster’ from showing up in front of the entire world?

Bridesmaid Lotto was an interesting find. It’s cute, funny, and sweet. It wasn’t a super sexy read, like I’m used to these days, but in this instance I think that’s okay.

Josie didn’t want to be part of the lotto. It seems like everyone else on the planet (including her best friend/roommate Calla) did. So when she wins the opportunity to act as a bridesmaid to one of the most popular socialites in the world, she doesn’t exactly leap at the chance. She grudgingly agrees to it, and her friend from work, Mattie, takes it upon himself to spruce up her wardrobe.

I loved Mattie. He was a bright spot in the story, and I hope to see more of him in future books. I don’t really care to see Josie’s mother though. She’s a pain in the butt and it feels like she’s trying too hard to be this super rich, super fancy woman. Why can’t she just be Josie’s mother and love and support her? Oops, sorry. I’m wishing she were more like my mom (I love you NanaKitty).

Jake, the best man who also happens to be one of the most eligible bachelors in all of Hollywood, is initially attracted to Josie because she doesn’t seem fazed by the whole situation. In all reality, she’s just as in love with Jake as the rest of America is, but because of the fact that she never wanted to be in the lotto and she somehow manages to act cool around him don’t give that little detail away to him.

Watching their romance bloom was cute and sweet. Some of the misunderstandings made me wonder if one or both of them were secretly in fourth grade (grownups talk!) but ultimately I really enjoyed the read.

My one complaint? Not enough sex. Everything was behind closed doors. Not even fade to black. And I am a dirty, dirty girl. But I do plan to read the next two books in the series, mostly because I want to know what happens with Josie and Jake.
