Gimme Gimme (I want I want): Books I’m dying for

I was going through a few emails, then somehow managed to get on some of my favorite author’s websites looking at the books they have coming up (or at their backlists, as the case may be), and I’ve decided that I’m going to be greedy and grab a few books. Why not? I have some money on an Amazon GC. I can splurge a little bit, right? So I’m making a wishlist. A couple of these won’t come out for a while, but I’m putting them on here anyway because I WANT THEM!

Luke Emerson is the last person Sebastian Wakefield expects to see strolling into his tattoo shop. But Luke’s not back after four years to take up where they left off. Not even to apologize for the cheating that broke them up.

Luke wants a custom tattoo, a memorial for someone known only as “A.J.”. Much as Seb would love to tell Luke to take this ink and shove it, he’s a professional. Plus, he’s reluctant to admit, he wouldn’t mind getting his hands on Luke again. Even if it’s just business.

Once Luke’s in the tattoo chair, though, Seb finds himself struggling with all the anger and resentment he thought he’d left behind—and those aren’t the only feelings reignited. Their relationship may have been turbulent, but it was also passionate. Four years clearly hasn’t been long enough for the embers of that fire to go cold.

A few subtle hints from Luke is all it takes to make Seb consider indulging in some of that physical passion. It shouldn’t be that tough to keep his emotions from getting tangled up in sweaty sheets.

After all, it’s not like he’s in love with Luke anymore. Right?

Product Warnings — Contains two exes who shouldn’t want each other like this, steamy ex-sex they shouldn’t be having, and a whole lot of ink.

Hard rock band Schadenfreude is finally on the verge of the success that’s eluded them for the last several years. With Aaron McClure as their new lead singer, nothing’s going to stop them…except maybe a steamy, secret relationship between Aaron and bassist Bastian Koehler. Aaron knows all too well what can happen when band members get involved with each other. After all, his last band was a casualty of his last relationship, and Schadenfreude forbids band members from dating for that very reason. But Bastian is too hot to resist, and besides, it’s just sex, so what’s the harm?

Bastian has just gotten out of a long relationship with his volatile ex-fiancée when Aaron catches his eye. The sexy singer is irresistible, and in spite of the potential for strife within the band if this comes out, Bastian can’t help himself.

Their passion in the bedroom is rivaled only by their ambition as musicians, though, and pretty soon, it’s going to tear them, and Schadenfreude apart, if they can’t get back to playing with the band.

From money pit to windfall…or is it a pitfall?
After ten years together, Ethan Mallory and Rhett Solomon are calling it quits. They’re more than ready to dump their heavy emotional baggage. The only thing they can’t seem to unload is the house. They’re stuck living as roommates with a hefty mortgage hanging over their heads…at least until they can bring in some extra money to pay it down. Solution: rent out a room.

Enter Kieran Frost. Suddenly, the only thing Ethan and Rhett both want more than getting away from each other is getting close to their single, young, hot roommate. Complicating things is the fact that Kieran doesn’t mind the attention from both, and he certainly doesn’t mind sharing.

Their combined chemistry ignites something else that Ethan and Rhett had thought was long dead—the mutual attraction that drew them together in the first place. Except bitter jealousy over Kieran could only push them even farther apart…

Warning: Includes multiple threesomes, angry sex, makeup sex, and a little peeking.

Release date: July 6, 2010

Don’t talk to strangers, young man—especially the dead ones.

It’s the Roaring Twenties. Skirts are short, crime is rampant and booze is in short supply. Prohibition has hit Little Egypt, where newspaperman David Flynn has come to do a follow-up story on the Herren Massacre. The massacre isn’t the only news in town though. Spiritualist medium Julian Devereux claims to speak to the dead—and he charges a pretty penny for it.

Flynn knows a phoney when he sees one, and he’s convinced Devereux is as fake as a cigar store Indian. But the reluctant attraction he feels for the deceptively soft, not-his-type Julian is as real as it gets.

Suddenly Julian begins to have authentic, bloodstained visions of a serial killer, and the cynical Mr. Flynn finds himself willing to defend Julian with not only his life, but his body.

Ever since the death of his shellan, Tohrment has been unrecognizable from the vampire leader he once was. Physically emaciated and heartbroken beyond despair, he has been brought back to the Brotherhood by a self-serving fallen angel. Now, fighting once again with ruthless vengeance, he is unprepared to face a new kind of tragedy.

When Tohr begins to see his beloved in his dreams—trapped in a cold, isolated netherworld far from the peace and tranquility of the Fade—he turns to the angel in hopes of saving the one he has lost. But because Lassiter tells him he must learn to love another to free his former mate, Tohr knows they are all doomed….

Except then a female with a shadowed history begins to get through to him. Against the backdrop of the raging war with the lessers, and with a new clan of vampires vying for the Blind King’s throne, Tohr struggles between the buried past and a very hot, passion-filled future…but can his heart let go and set all of them free?

Note from MK: Like I wasn’t gonna put this one on here? Come on. You know me better than that.

Turned into a vampire against her will, twenty-eight-year-old Merit found her way into the dark circle of Chicago’s vampire underground, where she learned there was more to supernaturals than met the eye—and more supernaturals than the public ever imagined.
And not all the secrets she learned were for sharing—among humans or inhumans.
Now Merit is on the hunt, charging across the stark American Midwest, tailing a rogue supernatural intent on stealing an ancient artifact that could unleash catastrophic evil on the world. But Merit is also the prey. An enemy of Chicagoland is hunting her, and he’ll stop at nothing to get the book for himself. No mercy allowed. No rules apply. No lives spared. The race is on.

If only they could lay low for a bit…

Then magic rears its ugly head when Lake Michigan turns black. The mayor insists it’s nothing to worry about, but Merit knows a panic is coming. She’ll have to turn to friends old and new to find out who’s behind this, and stop them before it’s too late for both the vampires and humans.

Review: Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill

They killed me. They healed me. They changed me. Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn’t exactly glamorous, but it was mine. I was doing fine until Chicago’s vampires announced their existence to the world—and then a rogue vampire attacked me. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsucker…and this one decided that the best way to save my life was to make me the walking undead. Turns out my savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now I’ve traded sweating over my thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan “Lord o’ the Manor” Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four-hundred-year-old vampire, he has centuries’ worth of charm, but unfortunately he expects my gratitude—and servitude. Right. But my burgeoning powers (all of a sudden, I’m surprisingly handy with some serious weaponry), an inconvenient sunlight allergy, and Ethan’s attitude are the least of my concerns. Someone’s still out to get me. Is it the rogue vampire who bit me? A vamp from a rival House? An angry mob bearing torches? My initiation into Chicago’s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war—and there will be blood.

Merit is a new vampire trying to adjust to life with fangs. Ethan is the head of the house she belongs to. He turned her to save her life. So why does she hate him? Because she doesn’t have a choice. She repeats this several times throughout the book (so many times that it really started grating on my nerves after a while), even going so far as to declare Ethan her “mortal enemy”. I understand the whole “being pissed off because she was turned against her will” thing but he turned her because she was going to die. So sorry girly, I’d rather live as a vampire than DIE.

The funny part about the whole “mortal enemy” thing is that she’s wildly attracted to him. And he wants her too. But she pushes him away time and time again (which irritates the crap out of me, I can’t lie). I think she’s trying to be noble about her position in the house (Sentinel – the protector of the house because even though she’s only a few days old, she’s got massive amounts of power and she’s really freaking strong) and still hold onto this stupid grudge. Even when she admits that she’s got a thing for Ethan, she still bitches about him.

I absolutely love the secondary characters. Catcher, Mallory, Luc, Lindsey, Chuck (Merit’s grandfather), Jeff… I love them all. They’re quirky and funny and well-written. They add a lot to the story and keep it going. I never got bored when the story didn’t center on the hero & heroine, the way I find myself doing a lot these days in other books I’ve been reading.

One secondary character I didn’t love is Morgan, who I’m told is going to be in future books. This really makes me want to bang my head against a wall. Ethan and Merit have more than enough in their way with all Merit’s neuroses, but do we really need a quasi love triangle too?

I guess I should say that when we first met him, I really liked Morgan. But then he found out that she’s that Merit, and from Cadogan house, and he flipped shit. Then he showed up later and just… annoyed me. He wasn’t charming to me anymore. He was just the stupid guy who went and narc’d on Merit and then somehow lost every bit of his suaveness in the process (because let’s be honest – after the incident at the club, he just wasn’t that smooth anymore).

Despite the fact that Merit irritated me with her whining about being changed without her consent, I did love the book. I couldn’t stop listening (yes, I’m listening on audiobook again). I even listened with my family at the baseball game – which wasn’t easy, let me tell you. It gets loud! I’m rooting for Merit and Ethan. Once they finally hook up, it’s going to set my earbuds on fire (which might cause some damage to my head, but I’m in a big building with medical equipment 8 hours a day so I think I’ll be ok).

Waiting on Wednesday: Drink Deep by Chloe Neill

Clouds are brewing over Cadogan House, and recently turned vampire Merit can’t tell if this is the darkness before the dawn or the calm before the storm. With the city iself in turmoil over paranormals and the state threatening to pass a paranormal registration act, times haven’t been this precarious for vampires since they came out of the closet. If only they could lay low for a bit, and let the mortals calm down.

That’s when the waters of Lake Michigan suddenly turn pitch black-and things really start getting ugly.

Chicago’s mayor insists it’s nothing to worry about, but Merit knows only the darkest magic could have woven a spell powerful enough to change the very fabric of nature. She’ll have to turn to friends old and new to find out who’s behind this, and stop them before it’s too late for vampires and humans alike.

Need more Merit? Read more Drink Deep or order at Amazon or Barnes & Noble

Thursday Thirteen: 13 books that WRECKED ME

So, I just finished a book that fairly destroyed me (Hard Bitten by Chloe Neill). To the point where I had to call my PIC Bells, totally snot-sobbing, to cry and whine and discuss the MAJOR PLOT ISSUE that nearly killed most of the people that read the book. And this got me to thinking: there have been a lot of books that have gotten to me like that. Seriously. A lot. Which is a good thing. It’s a mark of a really good book if it can pull that kind of emotion from me. If I’m crying (especially snot-sobbing), screaming, or laughing so hard I’m crying, it’s a freaking awesomebook. So this week’s Thursday Thirteen is a list of books that have in one way or another completely wrecked me – whether it be by making me snot-sob on the phone to my besties or by wrecking me for all other books for weeks on end because I’m certain there’s no other way any other book can top the book I just finished.

1. Snot. Sobbing. Phone. Call.

2. Couldn't read anything else for WEEKS.

3. Emotional wreck for at least a week. Possibly longer.

4. I threw the book across the room. Literally.

5. I re-read this one at least once a year but it makes me cry every time I do.

6. I cried for days after reading this the first time. (Book is WAY BETTER than the movie.)

7. I read this one while I was deployed - and walked around like a zombie after I finished it. Cried SO HARD.

8. Is it really any wonder I have 2 Megan books on the list? Another book where I was an emotional wreck. I still can't re-read this one because it affected me that much (although it is one of my favorites).

9. One of my favorite Shiloh books ever.

10. I had to set the book down at one point & walk away because of a certain scene. It's powerful, haunting, and will rip your soul in two. This is one of my favorite books of all time.

11. This book ruined me for all other books for weeks. Didn't think anything else would be nearly as good.

12. This one is another one that has a scene where I had to get up and walk away. Such a haunting scene, but a beautifully written book.

13. This entire book ripped me to shreds. I cried almost the entire time I read it.

What about you? Any books wrecked you lately? Which ones?

Review: Hard Bitten by Chloe Neill

Hard Bitten (Chicagoland Vampires, #4)Chicago is beset by supernatural tensions, and Merit-vampire protector of a safe haven called Cadogan house-is worried that the humans will be reaching for their pitchforks any minute. It doesn’t help that yet another vampire rave is broken up by the mayor, and a new inhibition- reducing drug is circulating through the community.

It’s up to Merit to put her house in order-literally. And if that takes getting a little blood on her hands, so be it.

Although this book was good I just didn’t find the story as interesting as the other books. The other characters didn’t seem to be around as much as usual and I love those Mallory/Merit moments. It felt like an inbetween book with not a lot happening till the end.
There was a massive cliffhanger at the end of this book, so beware! I’ll be rushing to the store to grab the next book but this one just didn’t seem to have the same grab as the others.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
