Today we have the lovely and very talented J.K. Hogan, author of the Vigilati Series with us! She is celebrating the release of the second installment of the Vigilati Series: Blood in the Valley:

- What song makes you happy every time you hear it?
Wow, that’s so hard because I am such a music collector. The first one that comes to mind right now is Gold on the Ceiling by The Black Keys (and I also have a cover by Tab Benoit). Ask me again tomorrow and I may have a different answer.
- What movie can you see over and over again without getting sick of it?
Another tough one, because I’m not one to watch movies over and over again. I’d probably have to stick with a classic and say The Princess Bride. Or anything with Robert Downey Jr. in it.
- What is the worst fashion trend you ever bought into?
Poofy bangs. Platform shoes. Satin. Patent leather. You name the badness, I tried it.
- Did you dream of writing when you were a little or did you dream of other thing like being a ballerina (or Wonder Woman, like me)?
When I was a kid, I don’t think I thought too much about the future. I spent most of my time in my imaginary worlds, so I guess it wasn’t too much of a stretch that I became a novelist. The only other thing I can think of was that I wanted to be a cowgirl. I did that for a while before I got married. 
- Do you have any comfort reads?
I’m such a speed reader, I don’t know if I could put it down to particular books. Anything romance, really. Reading in general comforts me. I remember reading Wake Me Up Inside, an m/m paranormal by Cardeno C. while I had really bad morning sickness. That was kind of comforting. J
- What is your writing process?
It starts with an idea, or a character, and then I just sit down and write chronologically. I stop when the story goes cold so it doesn’t feel forced, and once it picks up again in my head, I get back to writing. I write straight through usually, and then I go back to fine tune.
- Revisions: love them or hate them?
Hate, hate, hate. I understand the need for them, and that they make the book better, but they’re so hard. It’s like someone criticizing your children (either yourself or someone else). It can be hard to take.
- Who/what inspires you?
Anyone who’s been able to make a career and support themselves by writing. Oh, an anyone who’s successfully raised a child. Now that I’m a mom, I’m realizing what a difficult and important task that is.
- How much of your day-to-day life goes into your writing?
Not nearly as much as I’d like. That number is ever-changing with the whims of my infant son. I get “mommy time” at night between the time I go to bed and when I actually fall asleep, so that gives me an hour or two.
- Kids in books: yes or no?
Hmm. Good question. Yes, as long as they work in the story and aren’t too much of a distraction from the plot. However, I’m definitely not into the whole heroine gets pregnant angle. It only really works for me in historicals, and I don’t read those much anymore.
- Pets in books: cheesy or sweet?
Pets make everything better! I think they make the characters more real. But again, it has to work with the story rather than distract from it.
- What’s your favorite thing to eat? (recipes welcome!)
Sushi. I love sushi.
- What is the scariest thing about being an author?
The first thing that comes to mind is the inevitable bad review. It has or will happen to everyone. So I guess, critique in general…worrying that your book will flop. I think any creative avenue comes with the same fear.
- What is the most exciting thing about being an author?
Creating something from nothing and having it entertain people. It’s amazing—there’s nothing like it.
- Do you have anything to share with us?
I absolutely love chatting with people about books (mine, or anyone else’s), hot guys, movies, music, whatever. So find me on twitter, FB, tumblr…pretty much all social media. I’m pretty active in social media, so I’ll most likely respond.

That’s tough for me. I have rather antisocial tendencies, and I don’t really have a best friend…But I think you can never have too many friends as long as you can count on them.

Computer or iphone.
- Print or cursive?
Cursive. Not that you’d be able to read it, of course.
- Zombies or vampires?
Hmm… For sexy? Vampires. For action, zombies. Love The Walking Dead.
- Angel or Spike?
Well, I was never into Buffy, but I was into Bones, so I have to go with Angel because of David Boreanaz hotness.

J.K. Hogan has been telling stories for as long as she can remember, beginning with writing cast lists and storylines for her toys growing up. When she finally decided to put pen to paper, magic happened. She is greatly inspired by all kinds of music and often creates a “soundtrack” for her stories as she writes them.

My Review of Blood in the Valley:
What I liked loved:
The expansion of the wonderful world J.K Hogan has created, the characters, the action, and the romance .
I have adopted Drew as one of my book boyfriends, he is caring, sweet, vulnerable, damaged, HOT, and most of all: he handled the changes to the world around him (and happening in his life) the way my dream man would.
I have also decided that in my next life, I want to be Raven, she has her own moral code – that you after her upbringing only adds to her charm, she kicks major butt, and she has an amazing capacity for love (even if she won’t admit it to herself!).
We also get to peek in on Isla and Jere, Jere’s mysterious brother, and even his mom (who helped to raise Drew)! (I also really liked Ray)
The romance was wonderful, showing that two flawed, yet strong characters can overcome their fears and strengthen their weaknesses together.
This series features truly strong women who don’t sit back and wait for their men to fix things for them – for me, this is imperative in a Paranormal Romance series that has a female protagonist . You won’t find whiny chits who either want someone to fight their battles or who want to know “why me” with the Vigilati Series. These heroines roll with the punches, get back up, acknowledge their weaknesses, kick some major butt , and love their men.
It is no secret that I love PNR, that being said – I have standards and I tend to set the bar rather high. Blood in the Valley not only reached the bar, but bounded right over it! Nothing is better as a reader of PNR than when the author expands the boundaries and rules of that world and makes it believable. And I have to say that by bringing us into her world as the characters learn the rules, Ms Hogan has made every single broken rule and shattered boundary flow naturally with the story.

I personally enjoy graphic novels, but this cover is just um…uh…okay????
It seems as though she has some kind of mammal in her kangaroo (?) suit while someone else grabs her from behind to shield her ta-tas while she has some other creature eating her kangaroo hat (or is it the same one?) and yet one more creature popping up behind her. Is she checking on the animal in her pants or has the man behind her enticed her to self gratification? I will leave you to decide while I go and read something completely different. (Although I am tempted to read all four of these just to see if the cover will make sense to me.)

#AADSAV interview with Lissa Matthews
I met Lissa last year before AAD NOLA. She was kind enough to do a guest post for us, and ever since then we’ve had a great friendship. We got to hang out in NOLA and eat some delicious Cajun food while chatting. Today. I’m sitting down with Lissa so that you can get to know her a little better and see why I love her as much as I do. She’ll be at AAD in Savannah, so if you want to chat with her IRL, I suggest you register while you still can!
1. Tell us a little about yourself. Well, ummm… Can you be a little more specific? I don’t answer this kind of question well because I never know what anyone is going to want to know or not know. The most important thing is my coffee addiction. It’s serious and you’d do well NOT to suggest I give it up in favor of things more healthy. <g> Let’s see… NASCAR, College/NFL football, Golf fan. Deep thinker. People watcher. Home schooler. Foodie. Student of BDSM, fetishes, and kinks… Always learning, always asking questions. Lover of the printed word. Road trips. Southern girl (or, a G.R.I.T.S.). I’m 42, live in North Carolina with my family and a crapton of cats.
2. Did you dream of writing when you were a little girl or did you dream of other thing like being a ballerina (or world domination, like me)? I dreamed in fairy tales and a different life when I was growing up. Where I wasn’t left behind, or hurt.
3. You originally started out writing m/f. What made you decide to take the leap and start writing m/m? I’ve loved the genre since being introduced to it several years ago. I’ve tried writing it as you said, but it doesn’t seem to be translating as well from my head to the page. Hopefully, I’ll get better at it and knock one out of the park soon…
4. What is the first book that you can remember making an impact on you? Why did it make such an impact? The first book ever that I read that kept me coming back for more was called Good Queen Bess about Elizabeth I. I was in 3rd grade when I first checked it out of the library and was fascinated that she was a real life princess turned queen. I was enthralled with her story and still am. I still read almost everything I can get my hands on about her.
From there I read Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. These kids had guts, far more than I did, and I loved immersing myself in their worlds.
My first romance was The Bride by Julie Garwood. I read everything she had out at the time in a very short span of…a couple of weeks. I didn’t put the books down. I’d read one every night. She and an earlier college professor are where the seeds for writing began…
5. What is your writing process? Grab coffee, turn on computer, add in music, grab more coffee, tweet, Facebook, goof off, grab more coffee, and then stay at computer and write for several hours. Once I walk away, I have a hard time walking back so I try to get the majority of my words down in that first few hours.
6. How do you approach revising? With a lot of tears, grumbling, griping, and alcohol infused coffee, and junk food.
7. What authors inspire you? Vivian Arend, completely. Her work ethic is awesome. Delilah Devlin.
8. What are your top 5 comfort reads? After the Night, Linda Howard; Suddenly You, Lisa Kleypas; Dancing at Midnight, Julia Quinn; My Fair Captain, J.L. Langely; Love the Sinner (Brooklyn Sinners #1), Avril Ashton
9. How much of what you do in your day-to-day life goes into your writing? Day to day, not much at all. But life in general…cars breaking down, household repairs, people in the coffee shop, cars on the road, etc… That has about a 90% chance of making its way into a book somewhere down the line.
10. Do you write to music? If so, what’s your favorite music to write to? Yes, I always write to music. It’s a necessity. But it also has to be something I can sing along to without even realizing it. It can’t be new or I have to spend time listening for hours until it’s so deeply ingrained in my head that it’s just…there. What I write to depends on the story. Currently, I have one book I’m writing to country music in my ears, and another book I’m writing to some classic 80’s glam rock…
11. Describe your latest book. It’s a sexy romp about two long-time friends taking the leap into becoming lovers. It’s personal. It’s a fantasy. It’s called Trouble In The Making.
Johnny Trouble. He’s a commanding presence in leather and tattoos, both on stage and off. He’s had more than his fair share of groupies and lovers, but it’s time for a change and he reconnects with the one woman whose memory has driven him crazy since high school. Liz.

12. What do you love most about writing? When I get into the zone and the words flow.
13. What do you hate most about writing? When I can’t get into the zone and the words hurt worse than having teeth pulled.
14. What are you reading right now? Non-fiction: I’m reading Different and Talent is Overrated. Fiction: I’m inbetween books and haven’t decided what I’m going to pull from the TBR pile next.

- What song makes you happy every time you hear it? The Adele version of Make You Feel My Love
- What movie can you see over and over again without getting sick of it? HAHA…there are many, but Hope Floats or PS I Love You are the two I can watch constantly.
- What is the worst fashion trend you ever bought into? *Cringes* Teasing my bangs. I’m talking major teasing with a toothbrush to get those bad boys to stand almost straight up! Ugh, it was awful!
- Coffee or tea? (Bonus: what flavor?) Cappuccino actually…Folgers French Vanilla.
- What book makes you sob like an infant (but you love it anyway)? Lover Awakened by J.R. Ward
- What is your writing process? Depends on what kind of scene I’m writing. If it’s not particularly emotional then I’m good to just dive into it. If it is emotional then I have to have a favorite movie playing in the background, a hot cup of cappuccino, and a box of tissues. It’s comical actually because I’ve sat here and just sobbed through a scene before.
- Revisions: love them or hate them? Most of the time I love them. There is the occasion where I want a scene a certain way and won’t change it.
- Who/what inspired you to become an author? My life. LOL…I’ve been through so much that I just wrote it all down. Long story short those ramblings turned into a story which got published.
- How much of your day-to-day life goes into your writing? Not so much my day to day life, but certain things that my family does or says might make it in.
- Kids in books: yes or no? Yes…they make great secondary characters.
- Pets in books: cheesy or sweet? Sweet
- What’s your favorite thing to eat? (recipes welcome!) Popcorn! With nacho cheese powder.
- What is the scariest thing about being an author? Negative reviews. I understand I can’t please everyone, but there are some people out there who thrive off being hateful! It stings.
- What is the most exciting thing about being an author? Positive feedback. To hear a reader say they loved my work is the absolute best thing in the world.
- Do you have anything to share with us? Not really…I pretty much laid it all out there!

Bio:
I live in Columbus, Ga with my fiancée and our dog, Libby. I spend most of my time reading and writing. I write from a very personal place and find that creating a story based off of things I have been through is very cleansing. I am extremely close to my family so I tend to use little quirks that I love from my family members to create characters that are realistic.

WHAT IS SHE DOING TO HIM???? It appears that she has her hand in his pocket. It also looks like he has HIS hand in his pocket. Is there a secret side pocket? Is his hand down the front of his pants? He doesn’t look too happy with his situation at all, so maybe he is keeping her from copping a feel. I just don’t know.
Before I leave you to ponder over the hands and pockets of this book cover, I will say that I read several good reviews for this book. Maybe it was all an unfortunate photo editing error? The world may never know, but for me this book will forever be known as Pocket Gate.
