On yesterday’s tour stop at Books, Books & More Books, I talked about turning points for Adam and Sarah in The Reunion. What about Maria? What was interesting to us about Maria from the very beginning was that she doesn’t have to make as much of a change as either Sarah or Adam. Even though she’s somewhat younger than the two of them, she’s a rock. She already knows what she wants. She doesn’t know if she’ll get it, but for the time being, she’s willing to wait, and she has a Plan B.
Here’s an excerpt from the character notes we made as we were drafting this novel:
Maria wants, pretty much in this order:
- 1. To celebrate and enjoy her sexuality.
- 2. To have children, and in her early thirties, her time clock is ticking.
- 3. To have them with Adam, if he’ll come around.
- 4. To find a fulfilling long term committed relationship – which gender doesn’t really matter.
Adam most definitely meets Item #1. A former exotic dancer who also briefly explored a career in adult film, Maria has been very happy with Adam’s edgy sex games. She loves him, and she thinks he loves her, but he’s pretty much phobic about any emotion. In the long run, she won’t settle unless he changes. She’s open, clear about what she wants, ready to sacrifice what she must to get it but also willing to be patient and trust, at least as long as her window lasts.
We don’t want to give away too much about how Sarah’s appearance on the scene changes the picture for Maria – we’ll just let the excerpt below give you a taste Maria’s budding attraction. Maria is talking with Adam after the first time she and Sarah have made love.
Dark and brooding, Adam Granger was always the bad boy out of reach—but now he’s in Sarah Atkinson’s bed, the morning after their twentieth high school reunion. When Adam beats a retreat to his Pacific Palisades estate, former good girl Sarah throws caution to the wind and pursues him.
Petite copper-skinned Maria Ramirez greets Sarah at Adam’s front door. The former exotic dancer doesn’t challenge Sarah’s assumption she’s the maid—how long will it take the dark-haired beauty to figure out Maria is Adam’s live-in lover? Better yet, how long before Maria can entice her into their bed?
Determined not to rock his hard-won lifestyle, Adam resolves to push Sarah past her sexual limits so she’ll leave. When she stays, he watches helplessly as the two women fall in love with each other. Will they shut him out? And, if they let him in, what must he sacrifice?

TOP PICK at Night Owl Reviews
“The Reunion” by Adriana Kraft is a polyamory novel with real edgy characters with inclusive sexuality. I will just say this is not a read for the faint of heart. … I found “The Reunion” a very easy flowing smooth read. All the characters are well developed and so colorful. Once you start to reading you will be hard put to stop until you are at the end. … Very well written! Maria opened Adam’s office door quietly and entered, bringing him a second cup of coffee. She placed it on his desk. “Are you okay?”
Heaving his shoulders and avoiding direct eye contact, he nodded. “Sure, why not?”
“I could think of a few reasons.”
His gaze settled on hers. She witnessed pain before he was able to hide it.
“How was she?”
“Succulent.” Maria wasn’t going to lie. “You know, like when you take the first bite of lobster soaked in butter. It is so scrumptious you’re not sure you dare take a second bite for fear it will disappoint. That’s Sarah.”
A flash of emotion flickered across Adam’s face before he muttered, “I know. But you took a chance and went back for more. So will you take her from me?”
Startled, Maria chose her words carefully. “You’ve done little to hold onto her, if that’s what you want.”
“I took her slow,” he said, defensively.
“Right. Even then you threw it back in her face by leaving her bed.” Maria didn’t quite know how to respond to this Adam who was slumped before her. He’d always seemed so strong—defiant, when necessary, but always resilient.
“I don’t know what I want from her.”
“If you want to use her up and send her back to Chicago, you’re making good progress. If you want to hold onto her as more than a whimsical sex toy, then you’re doing a damn poor job. Maybe you should be practicing the art of seduction—romantic seduction, that is.”
He raked his fingers through his hair. “Maybe I should throw both of you out.”
Maria glared at him put her hands on her hips. “That’s your choice.”
Adam stared stoically back at her.
“You’re fighting a myth, Adam. Sarah was right when she said she’s not your teen angel or youthful fantasy. She’s capable of bleeding. And thank God, she’s capable of loving.”
Without waiting for a response, she spun on her heel, leaving Adam to brood alone.
